Hailed by critics and audiences for its heart and its wit, My Fair Lady is the story of acclaimed linguistics professor and confirmed bachelor Henry Higgins who wagers that he can pass off “gutter snipe” Eliza Doolittle as a duchess at the embassy ball by teaching her proper English. Through hard work, Eliza indeed convinces everyone at the ball that she is royalty. Higgins, however, refuses to acknowledge Eliza’s role in her transformation, and as a sign of her independence, she leaves his home. It is then that Higgins realizes he cares deeply for Eliza. She returns to his house at the end of the musical, and as he says, “Eliza, where are my slippers?” she throws one at him. He has a lot to learn! The musical is beloved for being one of the cleverest and romantic plays of all time.
